Backpackers Accommodation in East London, South Africa

East London is a sunny little port city in SA's Eastern Cape province, roughly half-way between Cape Town and Durban. If you're travelling as part of a gap year or are just on a tour of South Africa, it's a great place to chill out for a while & experience some comfortable, inexpensive African beach living.

Sugar Shack is spectacularly situated on a sand dune on Eastern Beach, literally within spitting distance of the beach, yet only a few minutes' walk from restaurants, pubs, clubs and supermarkets. We're also within easy walking distance of the inter-city bus station and East London's very own little Aquarium, complete with jackass penguins and performing seals!

The backpackers is in the original life-savers' building, which has a cool sun deck, big comfy TV area, (very cool) lookout tower, and clean, comfy, rustic accommodation. Check out the surf, tanned bods and the ships going in & out the harbour, or just watch the whales & dolphins go by.

Accommodation and Amenities

Our hostel offers excellent value for backpackers - wake up to the sound of surf for as little as R150 per day! We have camping, dorms, and cute log cabins which sleep 2 and have their own balconies with five-star views.

We are ideally situated on the central Eastern Beach making us a great option to contractors & volunteer groups. Check out our contractors dorm with ensuite ablutions.

It's self-catering accommodation at its best & we have a well-equipped guest kitchen. If you prefer to eat out, Buccanneers Pub & Grill is right next door, and there's more pubs, restaurants & take-aways up the road. We've got a fully-licensed bar at the backpackers which goes off regularly, and our friendly staff are on hand to make your stay enjoyable, and maybe kick your ass at pool (the table's free).

    The LION PARK tour offers you the chance to have an adventure cuddle and interact with wild Lion cubs and sometimes Cheetahs and Tigers which makes for great photographs.The other wildlife is also awesome especially the baby Giraffe with the two foot blue tongue who insists on licking you hello!.

    SANDBOARDING is a recreational activity similar to snowboarding that takes place on sand dunes rather than snow-covered hills. For some, it involves riding across or down a dune while standing with both feet strapped to a board. Ride with us on the near vertical dunes of East London's Nahoon Beach with coaching, all equipment and transport, is a great daytrip!

From N2: Take the left off ramp 1049 North East Express Way. Left at T-junction onto R72 North East Express Way. Drive until the first set of traffic lights. Left into Buffalo Park Drive. Left at traffic circle to John Bailie then drive about 200m and take first right into Esplanade Road on the beachfront and we are the first building on your right after that (about 4min drive).
